Vita
I've been born in the city of Brezoi, Romania, on the border between
Transylvania and Walachia provinces, and I lived there through
high school. The area is straight in the middle of the Carpathian mountains,
and I guess that's how I got hooked up on hiking and skiing.
I relocated to United States in 1999, and here I met my wife Anna,
to whom I got married in 2003. Our first baby, Alexander Peter has
been born in May 2006.
Hobbies
In the spare time we like to hike, ski and travel. We go to
New York quite often (Anna's daily commute to Federal Reserve doesn't
count), mostly to watch films and off(-off)-Broadway plays. We visit
the Metropolitan Museum of Art regularly, and sometimes we go to MoMA on
Fridays. I bicycle on daily basis, and also play soccer weekly (in 2004
I was the captain of the Computer Science Department soccer team).
- Some pictures I took in Melbourne, Australia for the Middleware
2006 conference. Awesome place.
Really!.
- We proudly announce the birth of our son, Alexander Peter Serban,
on May 31, 2006. Both the mother and the baby are in an excellent
shape. I can proudly testify that Alexander has very strong
lungs: look for yourself here.
- Some more pictures of our son and us, taken during the past few
months here.

Check out some of the
pictures from our latest trip to Quebec. La Mauricie national
park was quite a sport -- a kayak and hike big gulp.
-
Some of the
pictures from our exquisite trip to Peru. That was an
out-of-this-world experience (in a good sense, but eerie at times as
well).
-
Did I mention my driving spree phase?(No, I am not talking about
pollution and urban sprawling.) We had our own "easy rider"
experience in 2001, riding ocean-to-ocean from Oregon to New Jersey:
seven days 5500 miles. Here there are few of these pictures.
-
Some of the pictures from my
previous life in Romania (actually during a more recent vacation
there). You can see scores of my favorite pets
(Scurtu (a.k.a The Shortie), Linda, and Lungu (a.k.a. The Long One)),
and some extreme skiing and hiking (both in the month of June) with my
family over there. Some of the pictures of my vineyard at Piatra Olt
(southern Romania) at my country side home.
- If you downloaded some of the pictures above, you can try to
download the HTTP server as well. It is written in Java (it took me
about 2.5 hours to write), it consists of a single Java class, and it is ~10k
in size (~700 lines). Yes, it has thumbnails, but no comments. And it is
there, up and running, for a loooong time.

Check out the website of the Romanian Student Association. I
was its president, one of the founding fathers :), and also the web and mailing
list author. Now it is a grown up association, with more than 50
members, serving the Romanian community in and around Rutgers.
